Adam Hills @ The Comedy Store, Sydney

I've wanted to see Adam Hills for a very long time now. Unfortunately last year I had HSC exams and couldn't go, so I snatched up the opportunity to see him at the Comedy Store very quickly for the 14th February 2010.

The ordeal of actually getting to The Comedy Store started when we got on the train (of which we thought was going straight to Central. Or not.) We'd planned on getting an earlier train so that we would be an hour early to score prime seats. It wasn't until we got to Casula, 30 minutes in the opposite direction, that we realised we'd gone off track. The issue of trackwork was only now brought to our attention. Great. Off that train and onto another that was actually going in the right direction, and we were back on target. It took us 3 hours to get to Central, instead of the usual 1 and 1/2, and we arrived severly late. The show started at 7. We arrived at Central at 7. Fantastic.

After running through Central platform and to the car (in the rain) where we met up with friends, we rushed to the Comedy Store. Oh what's that? Detour. Excellent. Got past that, parked, ran to the lift which seemed to take forever to open, got out to the street and ran through the rain. We'd only made it 10 minutes late, which was a relief, but did mean seats in the back.

The most amazing comedy show I've been to started when we entered through the venue door. As we walked across the isle to the last available seats, Adam paused from talking to an audience member and asked why myself and 3 other friends, Cat, Emily and Mike, were late. Emily then proceeded to inform Adam on the transport issues. After Adam realised that we'd wanted to get front row seats he spied four seats to the side and invited us to move to the front. As we went to sit down, he said, "No, up on stage. You'll have the best seats in the house." On to the stage we went and, and the stage was where we stayed. For the entire show. It couldn't have gone any better. Throughout, the the four of us kept looking at each other with massive grins saying, "Fuck this is awesome!" An experience that the four of us will never forget.

Adam's show, "Mess Around" is "ad-libbing with a crowd. This year he's thrown the script out the window and devoting an hour-and-a-bit to simply messing around. No script, no plan, no idea." Adam is an excellent compere for this type of show; he really does revel in the joy of the audience's tales and stories. The Comedy Store is also an excellent venue for this type of show because the audience is up close and personal; and that we did with a few people.

The way the show all came together at the end was just brilliant. I don't think it could have gone any better if it was staged. The whole gig was absolutely excellent; and I especially enjoyed Adam's anecdotes about meeting the Queen and the devoted pizza man.

During the show, Adam took a photo of the four of us on stage and asked the Twitterverse: Who would you do?

Cat, Myself, Emily, Mike
Some of the responses were hilarious and were read on stage. A few of the best ones:
@howlieT @adamhillscomedy The one with the glasses. (Because I think I know her)
@Laneybert @adamhillscomedy wouldn't "what would you do?" be the appropriate question??
@JThompsondesign @adamhillscomedy all?
@jayzavialoff @adamhillscomedy guy on the end. CUTE. Jay, Newcastle
 'The chick with the glasses' (me) was declared the winner. HURRAH! :D

We could have stayed all night and watched Adam perform; but sadly it had to end. We wrote our names on an email list; oh, I forgot to mention it was being taped, which gave us great pleasure considering we were sitting on stage for the entire show and may be part of the compilation. And we nabbed a quick chat and photo before we headed off home.

The night for Caitlin and I didn't end however with the usual train home direct to Richmond. No, because we went out to dinner at Chatswood, we had to catch the train from there. But like the journey in, there was still trackwork being done. Our journey consisted of: a train from Chatswood to Olympic Park; then a bus from Olympic Park to Parramatta; a train from Parramatta to Blacktown; and we would have had to wait an hour before the next train to Richmond except a lovely friend came and picked us up. I think we ended up spending 5-6 hours on public transport that day; tiring, but it was all worth it.

It's pretty safe to say that we'll be catching Adam every time he is in Sydney. You should too; whenever he is in your part of the country. Just a fabulous comic.
