Trio of Laughs 29/4/10

#1. Comedy Festival Showcase
#2. David O'Doherty
#3. Die Roten Punkte

#1. Arriving a bit early, I went to book tickets for Die Roten Punkte, where I was greeted at the front door of The Metro with the offer of free tickets to the Comedy Festival Showcase and of course I said yes. Michael Chamberlin was MC; quite humorous throughout. About 6 or 7 comics for the night, however 2 did stand out.

I can't think of his name (and can't seem to locate him online), but we'll came him Impressions Guy. Impressions Guy was great! All of his impressions were spot on, and rifled through 25 in quick succession, instantly changing characters - too good.

My favourite comic however was 19 year-old Scotsman Daniel Sloss, who told a story about the confusion between the Dad sex talk and shaving talk, thinking one was the other - you get the picture. Side-splittingly funny. The 19 year old certainly held his own against the older comics, surpassing most with his observational humor. Just excellent. And I can't go past a Scottish accent too.

#2. Every time David O'Doherty has come to Sydney, I've always wanted to see him but couldn't - usually down to lack of funds or age. This time however, I was determined. Considering I only had the money available to book the day before the gig, Row B Seat 5 was quite awesome - great view, although anywhere in the Metro has a great view; one of the many reasons it's my favourite venue.

This show has got to be one of my favourite gig's so far. David O'Doherty was just hilarious throughout - nailing jokes and smashing back a heckle with precision. The DO'D literally had me in stitches with a joke about the quiet carriage on a London train. Sydney Comedy Festival's slogon - "Painfully Funny" surely did live up to it's expectation.

Another highlight was certainly reading from 100 Facts About Pandas. Silly, yet I think some of the 'facts' could be pushed onto people as truth.

I love David O'Doherty. His warm persona. Geeky jokes. Quirkiness. And his almost childlike personality - which was in full form. The stage had been set up with the words 'The Sydney Comedy Festival' stacked up on top of each other, however with the D, O and D isolated in front - quite clever, I thought.

THE SYDNEY COMEDY FESTIVAL

But of course the carefully planned and placed set up was soon destroyed; the letters kicked around - the DO'D having too much fun, rearranged to form 'AWESOME', and used to play human Tetris.

We were treated to 'Very Mild Superpowers' as an encore, requested by an audience member when asked if there were any songs we'd like to hear - despite some hesitance from DO'D, sharing he was a bit sick of it. I should have shouted "Sent a text (to the person the text was about)" - one of my favourite songs, but the thought came too late.

After the show I was able to snare a quick chat before show #3, which David was happy to do. He is of course really, really nice; as I had expected.

#3. Due to free tickets being given out after the Comedy Festival Showcase and David O'Doherty, The Lair was almost full, and well deserving. This made the show far more enjoyable, with the whole audience joining in with Die Roten Punkte's shenanigans.

I still love this dysfunctional stage family, with jokes and sketches perhaps even funnier second time round. Everything makes me happy. The rock-pose clowning, the red-smeared lipstick, the miniature instruments and the infectious songs. Brilliant.

MINI!
 Half-size
Not only do Die Roten Punkte have a tight act, they are excellent at improvising when responding to heckles, just excellently tying responses in with the show. Class act.

Otto and Astrid are really nice, and were glad to see me, thanking me for coming back. I had enough cash to get a t-shirt, CD and badge which I was very excited about.

Wednesday and Thursday were such incredible nights. They made me even more excited about seeing Ross Noble this Wednesday. I will be with friends so should be even more enjoyable.
